UPAK training places equal emphasis on the three aspects of karate: kumite, kata and kihon. Kihon (Japanese for 'basics')is the most essential part of it. As one could expect from a JKA dojo, classes were structured in Kihon, Kata and Kumite. Personally I've got enough problems with the standard 26 Shotokan kata and getting to grips with the in's and out's of those, and continually finding answers to the bunkai puzzles we have been left with, so for me (and many others I believe) this number of kata is sufficient. Shotokan karate is based on a deep stance and the ability to generate power from this posture. This was a well attended course where participants worked on the finer points of kata, kumite and kihon. It's simply repeating single techniques. Being the avid football fan I am of the hometown Superbowl Champion New York Football Giants (has a nice ring to it), I like to watch any and all things football- regular season or off-season. In fact, The inseparable trinity—kihon, kata and kumite, leading to kime—remain essentially unchanged, although constantly refined. On Sunday 14th October 2012 Chikara Shotokan Karate Academy hosted a black belt course at their Hawarden Dojo. Today, Shotokan Karate includes kihon (basics), kata (forms), kumite (fighting/sparring) and bunkai (applications - although not taught by everyone). Gichin Funakoshi taught just fifteen kata and even then he . Shotokan training is normally separated into three categories: kihon, kata and kumite. JKA karate is completely natural, not arbitrarily crafted for use in a point-based match.
